New Metro for Sydney’s CBD will be faster, greener and more reliable

New Metro for Sydney’s CBD will be faster, greener and more reliable

NSW is investing in a sophisticated new public transport system for Sydney’s CBD that is faster, greener and more reliable. It’s called the Metro.

What is the Sydney Metro?
The Metro will offer an entirely new public transport experience for Sydney residents. It’s not heavy rail, it’s not light rail, and it’s not a tram. The Metro is a transport system designed specifically for the needs of the CBD – like those in London, Paris and New York.

Where will the Metro run?
There will initially be 6 Sydney CBD Metro stations:

  • Central
  • Town Hall
  • Martin Place
  • Wynyard/Barangaroo
  • Pyrmont
  • Rozelle

How fast is the Metro?
The Metro will offer a faster pathway around the city. Here are some indicative travel times:

  • Rozelle to Town Hall – 8mins
  • Rozelle to Central - 10 mins
  • Central to Barangaroo-Wynyard – 5 mins

How often will the Metro run?
The Metro will run ever 2-3 minutes between Central Station and Rozelle – eliminating the need for timetables.

Easier and quicker to get on and off
The Metro uses single-deck trains with more doors than Sydney's traditional double-deck trains. This means passengers can move on and off more quickly and easily - reducing crowding and delays at stations.

Metro offers greater reliability
The Sydney Metro will operate independently of the CityRail network so inner city travellers will no longer be delayed by track problems at Penrith or Hornsby.

Metro encourages a greener transport choice
Since the Sydney Metro offers a faster, more reliable means of getting around the city, it encourages the use of public transport – which reduces energy use and carbon emissions.

When will the Metro be operational?
Construction of the CBD Metro will commence in 2010 and the first trains are expected to operate by 2015.

Creating jobs and building a better future
The Sydney Metro project will create hundreds of construction jobs in the short term. Just as importantly, it provides an important new transport system for Sydney that helps maintain our reputation as one of the great cities of the world.
