Bus corridors - making Sydney greener and even more liveable

Bus corridors - making Sydney greener and even more liveable

The $295 million Strategic Bus Corridors program will lower journey times and increase the appeal of public transport – making Sydney greener and even more liveable.

Giving priority to Sydney buses
The Strategic Bus Corridors program gives buses priority on 43 key routes around Sydney. This will not only improve travel times for existing users – it will provide further incentive for other commuters to switch from cars to public transport.

New Bus Priority Measures
NSW is giving Sydney’s Buses priority by providing clearly marked bus lanes, giving them early start signals at intersections and some dedicated roads. The measures will ensure buses have priority in critical areas, reducing the time people spend on the bus – and waiting for them.

Investing in a quicker, greener way to get around Sydney
We’re investing in 2 key projects to help deliver our Strategic Bus Corridors to Sydney:

  • •     $175 million Victoria Road Inner West Busway project.
  • •     Spit and Military Roads project

These projects are in addition to bus priority measures on key corridors across Sydney and will help create a traffic network that acknowledges the importance of public transport to Sydney’s future.

Giving Sydney buses the jump
The program specifically targets key choke points around the city that currently limit effective bus speeds. The measures include:

Dedicated red bus lanes – used on approaches to congested intersections such as Victoria Rd at Monash Rd, Gladesville and Devlin St, Ryde

Dedicated bus bypass lanes - such as “left turn only, buses excepted” like those at the intersection of Epping Rd and Delhi Rd in North Ryde, and the intersection of the Princes Highway and Acacia St in Kirrawee

Bus “Early Start” Signals - that give buses the “jump” at traffic lights, such as those at the intersection of Pennant Hills Rd and Jenkins Rd in Carlingford, and at the intersection of Parramatta Rd and Woodville Rd in Granville

More Transit and No Stopping Lanes

Investing in a better future
The $295 million Strategic Bus Corridors project not only makes Sydney an easier and more sustainable place to live. The investment helps create jobs in the short term and improves the long-term economic prospects of Sydney. NSW is investing in a better future.
