Princes Highway

The Princes Highway is being upgraded to provide a high quality link to southern NSW. The multi-stage, multi-million dollar development is improving access and road safety, lowering travel times and stimulating economic activity in the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and South Coast regions. 

The Princes Highway upgrade is the NSW Government’s highest priority for roads in the Illawarra and the NSW South Coast.

Princes Highway – linking Sydney to the South
The Princes Highway is the main link from Sydney and the Illawarra to the Shoalhaven and NSW South Coast  To improve safety and boost the economic viability of southern NSW, we are investing in a series of upgrades to the Princes Highway.

Oak Flats to Dunmore - $120M – Under Construction
Will provide approximately 6.5km of new dual carriageway when completed later this year – completes four lanes between Sydney and Kiama

Kiama Ramps - $14M – Completed 2009
 A new southbound off-load ramp to Kiama and a new northbound on-load ramp to improve access to and from Kiama and cater for future growth.

Gerringong to Bomaderry – Planning underway
Planning is under way on the four lane upgrade between the Mt Pleasant Lookout north of Gerringong and the Cambewarra and Moss Vale roads intersection at Bomaderry in the south.  It will include a bypass of Berry.  The preferred route has been selected and concept design and environmental assessment has commenced.

Kinghorne St to Forest Rd, South Nowra – Planning underway
This 6.3 km section will complete 4-lanes between Bomaderry and the Jervis Bay turn-off, resulting in better road safety and lower travel times.

$23.5m upgrade - Forest Rd to Jervis Bay Rd - Completed
The upgrade of 4 km between Forest Road and Jervis Bay Road has improved safety, reduced travel times, and enhanced access. The $23.5 million project was completed on 12 Nov 2008 - 2 months ahead of schedule.

Princes Highway upgrade at Victoria Creek – Planning underway
Planning has started on realignment of the highway from Narooma Rd (the Old Princes Highway) to the Tilba Tilba deviation south of Narooma, including replacing the Victoria Creek bridge. Two alignments are being considered.

Princes Highway upgrade at Dignams Creek – Planning underway
Planning has started on realignment of the highway from approximately 2.5km south to approximately 6km north of Dignams Creek, including replacing the Dignams Creek bridge.  Alternative alignments are currently being investigated.

Princes Highway Bega Bypass – planning under way
Planning has commenced for this Federally funded project.

Creating jobs that build our future
The Princes Highway upgrade is an investment by NSW in the future of the Illawarra. The new roads will provide construction jobs now and help open up a range of economic opportunities for communities in southern NSW.
