The NSW Fire Brigades’ Sawtell Fire Station has been officially opened. The $1.31 million station is in a better position to provide fire and emergency protection to the local community and built to some of the most modern environmental standards.
The firefighters respond to a range of emergency situations and they need to have the best facilities to provide essential fire protection for Sawtell’s growing population of 18,000 residents, as well as local businesses.
The site was chosen because of its location, size and access to the township of Sawtell, Toormina, direct access to Coffs Harbour, and proximity to the Pacific Highway to respond to major incidents.
This investment allows firefighters from Sawtell, together with their colleagues from surrounding fire stations to maintain a high level of service to the community.
There has been considerable growth in industrial developments around Sawtell, with the major industry being tourism. The new fire station reflects this growth in demand.
This new station is part of the largest building program in the NSW Fire Brigades’ history, providing new and upgraded facilities for communities around the State, at a cost of more than $120 million.
The new Sawtell station became operational in July this year and includes a double engine bay, office and watchroom, a mess and training room, a locker room and amenities for up to 22 retained firefighters. Also included in the building is a water storage tank to collect roof rainwater to provide water to the toilets and external watering.
