The Mater redevelopment rationalises health care in the area by co-locating Calvary Mater Newcastle and Hunter New England Mental Health onto one site.
Bringing Oncology and Mental Health services to Newcastle
The new combined facility will bring much needed mental health and radiotherapy services to Newcastle. Once completed, the Calvary Mater Newcastle will become the largest provider of radiation oncology services in NSW.
Improving Newcastle Healthcare in 3 ways

1. Redevelopment of Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital – will have 204 beds, a new and larger emergency department, intensive care and coronary care units.
2. Construction of a new 100-bed acute mental health facility – built on the Mater site to replace existing facilities at James Fletcher Hospital, it will include 14 extra acute mental health beds.
3. Expansion of cancer radiation therapy facilities at Calvary Mater – existing facilities will be refurbished and new equipment provided to make it the biggest radiation oncology centre in the state.
