IKEA has chosen the former Tempe Tip site in southern Sydney

IKEA has chosen the former Tempe Tip site in Sydney as the location for its Australian headquarters and a massive new showroom. The $120 million project will generate 500 construction jobs, 600 ongoing roles and involve the regeneration a Heritage-listed building.

Largest IKEA store in the Southern Hemisphere
Founded in 1943, IKEA pioneered flat-pack design furniture at affordable prices and is now the world's largest furniture manufacturer. The showroom will not only be IKEA’s biggest store in Australia – it will be their largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Regenerating the Heritage-listed ATECO building
To create its Australian headquarters, IKEA will retain and refurbish the Heritage-listed ATECO building and clock tower on the site. A grand Moreton Bay fig will also be maintained and a further 270 trees planted to help preserve the area’s local character and visual amenity.

Parking for 1,775 vehicles
The project provides parking for 1,775 vehicles to deal with the expected volume of customers. A number of modifications were made to the original planning proposal to help minimise impact on the local area.

Investing in NSW’s future
In addition to IKEA’s $120 million investment, development levies have been imposed to help integrate the project into the community, including:

  • $25,000 for Local Area Traffic Management Study
  • $2 million for an upgrade of Bellevue St
  • $1.45 million for traffic management works in the local area

500 construction jobs, 600 ongoing positions
Development of the IKEA showroom and warehouse will create 500 jobs during the construction phase alone. IKEA expects 2-3 million people to visit the new Tempe store each year, providing a further 600 ongoing jobs and a major boost to the local economy.

Creating jobs that build a better future
The approval of the IKEA proposal is further proof of NSW’s determination to help create jobs for NSW workers that build a better future for our state. IKEA’s choice of Sydney as the location for its Australian headquarters will help further the city’s reputation as the country’s international gateway.
