
The Australian Government is delivering a $42 billion Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan that includes funding for building and maintenance of schools, social housing and road and rail maintenance. The program is designed to support employment and make Australia more resilient in the current global financial crisis.
NSW’s share of this funding is valued at over $7 billion including $1.5 billion to non-government schools. Key Social Housing and Education components of the funding are listed below. The works are to be completed in just two years.
Each State and Territory must increase its expenditure by at least the amount allocated by the Australian Government. The NSW Government is already committed to an extensive program of capital investment. The total infrastructure investment being managed by the NSW Government is $62.9 billion over the next four years which will sustain an average of over 160,000 jobs every year.
Education
- $151m to build science and language laboratories in government secondary schools
- $287m for maintenance in government primary and secondary schools from the National School Pride program
- $2.9bn for new and refurbished buildings in government primary schools
- plus $244 million from the NSW Government for maintenance on government schools in 09/10
